'I had no time to turn and flee. The snow would have hampered my flight and the bear would have caught and ripped me in an instant. So I stood my ground, rammed the butt of the crude spear into the snow behind me and felt it strike solid, frozen earth. Scattering the snow in all directions, the bear came careering towards me. When it saw the obstacle in its path, its warning growl rose to a full threatening roar and it rose on its back legs, its paws ready to strike.
