Searching for traces of the ‘battling whale’ Tim Severin re-visits the scenes of Melville’s adventures in Nuku Hiva, and in the Philippines meets ‘hook jumpers’ who leap on the backs of ten ton whale sharks. He sees a native whale hunter in Tonga turn from priest to shaman, and on a remote Indonesian island comes across an all-white sperm whale which attacks the native fishing fleet - a living Moby Dick.
